Capitol Theatre Improvement Campaign

EDITED- SLH00781.JPG

Your support is essential to continue improvements

Phase I began in May 1992, the start of a multi-phase Capitol Theatre Improvement campaign. It kicked off the necessary modifications to accommodate live theater and get the theater back in shape.

Phase II was “behind the scenes” work and included dressing rooms and the scene shop, new custom-built art deco chandeliers, electrical enhancements, and sound system work.

Phase III began in 2009. It rebuilt lobby and concession areas completing a fully functional theater. The work was done in time for the third-annual South Dakota Film Festival, which was hosted by Academy Award winner Kevin Costner. Along with the Phase III renovations ACT was able to buy a 35mm projector and install a surround-sound system for film events.

Phase III - Film fund-raising paid for state-of-the-art digital film equipment and completion of the new 95-seat theater area for film and theater productions.

Phase IV fund-raising paid for re-lamping the marquee with LED bulbs. Repairs to the marquee are still underway. Making downtown shine again!

In 2023 Rain damage compromised Capitol Theatre's old chimney connected to an outdated boiler system. Urgent repairs, including structural dismantling, are complete, but finishing touches are needed to maintain historical integrity. Costs exceed $20,000.

But work is never done! Even when phases are complete, technical enhancements are always necessary, so the Capitol Theatre Improvement Campaign will continue.

Please help us with the “capital” investment in the historic Capitol Theatre. Contributions are tax deductible!
